DE ECHOPUT HISTORY
Hotel the Echoput is named after a very deep well built under the Reign of king Louis Napoleon. The well is famous for its wonderfully sounding echo. King Louis Napoleon let the well be dug by his army between the years of 1809 and 1811. Queen Wilhelmina (1880-1962) gave the order for a small restaurant to be built near the echoput for the many tourists that came to behold the well with its clear-sounding echo. This restaurant gradually turned into a gastronomic masterpiece which is Hotel De Echoput. Hotel the Echoput is nowadays considered as one of the cornerstones of Dutch gastronomy.
Our first Michelin star was already awarded to us in 1967. The Echoput is a family business and is to this day owned and operated by the Klosse family. The newly rebuilt hotel opened in 2007 and was rewarded in Beverly Hills by the IRHA as: “Best new luxury restaurant of the world”. Not very far from Hotel De Echoput, only 12 kilometers away, lies the home of the famous 3-star Michelin restaurant ‘De Leest’ in Vaassen operated by chef Jacob Jan Boerma and Kim Veldman.
Tasting, flavour and finding the perfect match between wine and food, is the passion of the owner dr. Peter Klosse, co-owner Hotel De Echoput. He wrote several novels and obtained his PhD. at the University of Maastricht for his thesis “The Concept of Flavour styles to classify flavours”. Peter Klosse is founder of De Academie voor Gastronomie, and is Professor at Stenden University in Maastricht.
